Phoenix Rising’s Cortez named USL Player of the Week
After his three-goal effort on Saturday against Oklahoma City Energy FC, Phoenix Rising FC forward Chris Cortez was named the USL Player of the Week for Week 2 of the season on Tuesday.
Cortez was named on 72 percent of the league’s ballots, which consists of a media member in each USL market. Atlanta United 2 midfielder Jon Gallagher finished second with 12 percent, while Swope Park Rangers forward Kharlton Belmar and San Antonio FC midfielder Mikey Lopez finished tied for third.
Cortez scored goals in the 45th, 83rd and 94th minutes of Saturday’s match and also added an assist on Solomon Asante’s goal that opened up the scoring on the evening.
The hat trick was the first in the club’s history.
It is the second honor of the season for the team, as Asante was named to the honorable mention of the Team of the Week for Week 1.
Phoenix Rising returns to the pitch on Saturday as they travel to Reno, Nev. to take on Reno 1868 FC at 4 p.m. Arizona time.
