Solomon Asante has been rewarded with an honorable mention in the USL Team of the Week. Asante was the difference maker in the March 31 match for Phoenix Rising’s March against Reno 1868 FC. This is his second honor in just three weeks.
His play garnered several unsuccessful scoring chances throughout the game, but the difference was made in stoppage time. The 27 year-old midfielder obtained the ball at the top of the penalty box and was brought down with a hard slide tackle. The player, known as ‘Solo,’ by some fans, played a powerful strike past the goalkeeper to give the Firebirds a second consecutive win.
The game-winning goal is Asante’s third goal in his first three games, a club record. His play is also garnering the team coverage in his native Ghana, with weekly reports being posted at ghanasoccernet.com, aside teammate Gladson Awako and other Ghanaian players like Latif Blessing (MLS-LAFC).
Asante has figured strongly into all three Phoenix Rising matches thus far, and will likely be seen again on April 7, when the team faces the 2017 Western Conference Champions Real Monarchs SLC at 7pm at Phoenix Rising Football Complex.
