On the heels of a tough loss to the USL Western Conference leaders Real Monarchs SLC, Phoenix Rising FC returns to the pitch to take on one of the surprises of the Western Conference this season, Portland Timbers 2 FC.

PHOENIX RISING LAST MATCH: In a 1 vs. 2 matchup of Western Conference powers, Real Monarchs got the upper hand early with a first goal from Sebastian Velasquez and an own goal by Mike da Fonte, followed by a red card issued to midfielder Gladson Awako led to the flood gates opening, and Real Monarchs secured its hold to the top spot in the West with a 4-1 victory over Phoenix Rising.

AWAKO SUSPENDED FOR RED CARD: The USL Discipline committee came down hard on Awako for his red card offense against Real Monarchs. Awako was issued a three-match ban, which will include matches against Portland Timbers 2 FC on Sunday, Orange County SC on Aug. 11 and Las Vegas Lights FC on Aug. 18.

PORTLAND REPORT: Portland is coming into the match on the heels of a 2-2 draw on Wednesday. Goals by Marvin Loria and Jack Barmby offset goals by Orange County’s Aodhan Quinn and Thomas Enevoldsen. Portland was a bottom third of the table team in 2017 but has seen a big turnaround in part to the play of forward Foster Langsdorf, who leads the team with 10 goals on the season. Loria, Victor Arboleda and Augustine Williams are tied for second with four goals apiece. Kendall McIntosh and Alex Mangels are the main goalkeepers, with McIntosh making 12 appearances, allowing 20 goals on the season, and Mangels making eight appearances and allowing 12 goals on the season. Portland is just 5-5-0 at home this season. Portland is fourth in the league in goals scored with 37, followed by Phoenix with 36.

PHOENIX ALL-TIME VS. PORTLAND: Phoenix Rising is 2-4-1 against Portland, winning the last two contests they have met, including a 2-0 win Sept. 27, 2017 at Portland that clinched Phoenix Rising FC’s first ever playoff berth.
