Phoenix Rising announced today that former Rising FC center-back Peter Ramage will rejoin the team and serve as assistant coach to Rick Schantz.
In a press release, head coach Schantz extolled Ramage’s virtues. “Peter has played at the highest level and his experience, passion for the game, and his drive for excellence, make him the perfect addition to the team.”
Ramage started his professional career time with Newcastle United, with his first start coming in 2005. The 6′ 1″ defender has tours with Queens Park Rangers, Crystal Palace, and Barnsley before completing his playing career with Phoenix Rising. He was a key piece of the 2017 Phoenix Rising FC squad that finished the season in 5th place and qualified for the playoffs. Ramage served as team captain for most matches before Chelsea legend Didier Drogba took over duties halfway through the season.
The 34-year-old was the lynch pin in a defense that started the 2017 campaign on shaky ground. Working with defensive-minded coach Patrice Carteron, Ramage’s unit showed vast improvement. Alongside defenders Amadou Dia, Jordan Stewart, Kody Wakasa, Doueugui Mala, and Victor Vasquez, Phoenix Rising became known for solid defensive play.
Ramage’s experience working alongside former coach Carteron and current head coach Schantz should serve this year’s defensive unit well. Though the squad put together an unbelievable June, allowing zero goals, discipline has been an issue. Rising FC rank near the worst in the league in fouls conceded yellow and red cards.
Ramage is expected to arrive in Phoenix in time for this Saturday’s match against divisional rival Orange County Soccer Club. Even with 41 points each, OCSC currently sits above Phoenix Rising FC at second place in the standings on tiebreakers.
