While the success of Phoenix Rising FC and other lower league squads has been the talk of the Arizona soccer, the Women’s Premier Soccer League has quietly been making progress in both Phoenix and Tucson. The WPSL, a second-division league, has expanded to 110 teams in 17 divisions across the United States and Canada, and is currently the largest women’s soccer league in the world (by number of clubs).
Next season, the State of Arizona will field three WPSL squads. FC Arizona Women join Phoenix Del Sol and the 2018 Pac-South Division Champion FC Tucson Women.
FC Arizona Friday announced the signing of co-Associate Head Coaches, Brett Meskill and Lindsey Johnson, for the their inaugural season.
Meskill is a United States Soccer Federation B Licenseholder and coaches with Arizona Arsenal Youth Soccer (ECNL), and serves as the assisistant coach for the Chandler-Gilbert Community College Women’s Soccer Team. At the club level, Meskill has won 3 AYSA State Cups.
Johnson serves as the Director of Coaching for FC Bayern affiliate Arizona Soccer Club (ASC). Her bio states that “Soccer is my passion and not only do I love to develop players, I love to win and instill those characteristics into my players and teams.” Also a USSF National ‘B’ License holder, Johnson is a former division I player with a top ranked Santa Clara University squad and has experience with the U14-U20 US Women’s National Teams.
The WPSL season runs from May to July. The schedule has not yet been released, but when it does, it will be posted on the Firebird Soccer Calendar.
