GLENDALE, AZ- With Manchester United and Club América in town for what many billed as “the biggest club match ever played in Arizona,” 37,766 fans turned out to watch two massive clubs in action. It was the first preseason match for both sides, and the first-ever match in Arizona for Manchester United.

There were events all around the valley to celebrate the Red Devils’ arrival, including two meet and greets with longtime defender and Irish national Denis Irwin. At one event, Irwin sounded optimistic about Phoenix’s chances to reach MLS and to one day host a World Cup match. The full audio with Irvin will be exclusively available on next week’s Rising As One episode.

Later, a number of United supporters gathered at Salt Bar in Glendale to pregame the momentous occasion. Red Fury member Michael Vanderplas was part of the group, and he said: “There were people coming in from New Mexico, (and) from England. This is the first time many supporters have seen United play in person, and it’s very exciting.”

On the subject of Phoenix Rising’s growing support, he continued, “We are trying to build an atmosphere like those seen in England, Germany, and Mexico. The passion for Phoenix Rising is growing in the valley…and I believe if we get MLS, we will get some big friendlies in a few years.”

Club América supporters were similarly thrilled for the match. Numerous Mexican license plates were spotted in the parking lot, and other América supporters traveled across state lines to see the match.

Jennifer Avalos, a lifelong América fan and Rising season ticket holder, gave another perspective: “This is the very first time I get to see my favorite team play! The atmosphere was insane…with drums banging and action. We have América fans from all over the states at the supporters’ section.”

She added, “Arizona should host more of these games, (and) I would love to see Phoenix Rising host more of these games.”

The lively match ended as a 1-1 draw thanks to second half goals from Henry Martin and Juan Mata, but the real winners in this friendly were local fans of the beautiful game.
