RECAP: Draw Four

Despite playing with a man up for over 50 minutes, Phoenix Rising FC could not find the back of the net on the way to a disappointing 0-0 draw with Fresno FC Saturday night at Casino Arizona Field in Scottsdale.

Coach Rick Schantz made four changes to his squad from last week’s draw against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC. Zac Lubin started in net in place of Carl Woszczynski, Colin Fernandez started for James Musa, Kevon Lambert started for Javier Perez and Junior Flemmings started for Jason Johnson.

Phoenix Rising had its first chance in the 13th minute when Adam Jahn intercepted a Fresno pass in the attacking half. He then slotted the ball out wide to Solomon Asante, who got in a cross to the head of Flemmings but his header went just wide.

Phoenix Rising had its first corner of the match in the 31st minute. Joe Farrell was able to get a head on it but it was gathered easily by Fresno keeper C.J. Cochran.

Phoenix Rising had its best chance of the first half in the 36th minute. Taking advantage of a temporary man down situation, Flemmings hit a beautiful switch pass to Asante, who hit a first-time cross to Jon Bakero, whose shot just went wide of the Fresno net.

Phoenix Rising went a man up in the 41st minute when Fresno’s Seth Moses fouled Flemmings hard, drawing a second yellow for a red card. Amadou Dia hit the following free kick from 25 yards just over the top of the net.

On the first minute of first half stoppage time, Asante hit a pass to Jahn, who tried to one-time it past A.J. Cochran but just missed wide. Bakero had a golden opportunity just short of halftime when Asante hit a ball into the middle, but Bakero’ shot went just wide and the teams went into the break tied at 0-0.

Phoenix had a good chance in the 56th minute when Tristan Blackmon found Asante, who found Bakero, who flipped to Jahn whose header went just over the bar. Asante then had an attempt at goal in the 62nd minute, but his shot was parried away bu C.J. Cochran.

Sub Jason Johnson almost put Phoenix Rising on the boars in the 65th minute when he hit a rocket from 30 yards out that beat C.J. Cochran, but just hit enough of the crossbar to deflect back out.

The draw for Phoenix Rising, its fourth straight on the season, sets a franchise record for consecutive draws. It is also the first clean sheet of the season for the team.
